Ugadi - March 23 -2012

Meaning of Ugadi:
"Ugadi"  depicts the beginning of spring season and as per our Hindu calender spring is considered as the first season of the year hence heralding a new year and a new beginning :) Spring also marks the beginning of new flowers (perfumed jasmines / mallepulu / malligehuvvu) and specially season for raw mangoes.


 This festival is very important for all Kannadigas and Telugites and is often celebrated the same way right from the rituals to the dishes made on this day. Maharastrians also celebrate this festival known as Gudipadava. In Karnataka it is pronounced as YUGADI  and in Andhra as UGADI , both meaning the same - Yuga = era and Adi = start

Tradition:
People wake up early in the morning, clean their house and take oil head bath, wear new clothes followed by traditional prayers to God and place toranam (made with mango leaves) on their front door. Many women prefer to read vishnu sahsranamam or lalitha sahsranaman or Ashtothrams on this day to begin their new year smoothly. 


Ugadi Pacchadi and its significance:
This day reminds me of a very special and unique flavoured pacchadi / chutney and yes that is Ugadi pacchadi. Ugadi pacchadi  is one such thing that has become synonymous with the festival Ugadi. This traditional pacchadi is a combination of neem flowers which are extremely bitter in taste and jaggery which is very sweet. It is believed that the main purpose of the pacchadi being bitter & sweet signifies the different aspects of human life like joy & sorrow. This denotes one must accept all the sweet and bitter things that are in store for us with gratitude :)


This pacchadi is a must to be made in every house and it is distributed to neighbors and relatives on this occasion. It is generally taken on an empty stomach before starting other dishes.Other tempting dishes that are mainly prepared on this day are Pulihora, bobbatlu in telugu/ pulihogare, obbatu in kannada and preperations made with the raw mango items. 


In the evening people visit temple and listen or read panchagam as a tradition.
This Ugadi being my first festival in US after marriage, I wondered how I can make Bobbatlu/obbatu/holige as I have never made while I was in India. I remember my grandmother making very huge obbatus using wheat flour.
